Noopept (omberacetam) is a synthetic dipeptide-derived nootropic, N-phenylacetyl-L-prolylglycine ethyl ester, designed at Moscow’s Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology as a piracetam analog.
Its developers describe Noopept as a dipeptide analog of the older drug piracetam, designed by mapping piracetam’s structure onto peptide fragments (Gudasheva and colleagues, 2018). A 2003 paper from the same group reported that its main metabolite, cyclo-Pro-Gly, is identical to an endogenous dipeptide and behaves much like piracetam. Noopept is made as an oral tablet, not an injectable peptide.
Human evidence is limited and mostly Russian. The developers report that the tablets passed clinical trials for mild cognitive impairment after vascular disease or brain injury, and that the drug has been on the Russian market since 2006. The main published trial, a comparison with piracetam by Neznamov and Teleshova (2009), came from the Zakusov Institute itself. As of October 2026, ClinicalTrials.gov lists no registered Noopept study.
Noopept is a prescription medicine in Russia, but it is not FDA-approved, and the FDA says products containing it do not qualify as dietary supplements.
In a February 4, 2019 warning letter to Peak Nootropics, the FDA classed Noopept as an unapproved new drug that cannot be sold across state lines without FDA approval, and as misbranded. In Europe, a 2025 market survey by 12 official medicines control laboratories found Noopept was the most commonly detected nootropic and noted that it is not authorised in the EU or Australia.
Outside Russia, Noopept moves through channels no pharmacist oversees. The same 2025 survey intercepted bulk raw powder and products presented as dietary supplements. With no regulator checking these products, a batch-level assay tells you more than the name on the pouch.
